To become a lifesaver the first award you need to gain is the Bronze Medallion. You have to be 15 years of age for this award. The Bronze Course takes approximately 8 weeks to complete and includes the ability to swim in both the pool and the surf, knowledge of rescue techniques, first aid, resuscitation, radios and general life saving methodology.
Before commencing training for the Bronze Medallion you will be required to complete a 400 metre pool swim in nine minutes or less.
After successfully completing your bronze medallion you are able to commence voluntary beach patrols and you are placed on the club patrol roster. Generally you have one patrol every 3-4 weeks.
Once a member has obtained their Bronze they must complete an annual proficiency exam each season to continue their patrol and competition activities.
All bronze proficiencies for this season have been set and dates can be viewed on the club calendar. All proficiencies need to be completed well before the cut off of December 31. The proficiency contains a paper which needs to be completed before arriving at the club to do your proficiency.
There are other optional awards that can be obtained.
