Lifesaving is different to many other sports because ultimately it is a voluntary organisation where the main function is to provide a voluntary service to the public. The Surf Sports arena of lifesaving has come about through the desire of lifesavers to hone their skills to be the best lifesavers possible. However because lifesaving and saving lives is the organisations main function there are many lifesaving obligations that need to be met before members are able to compete.
